Our CSA
Our community supported agriculture program has been operating since 1994. Previously, vegetables were grown at Poplar Haven Farm
and then at Cedar Creek Organic Gardens by David Gorzynski. In 1999, the farming moved to Round River Farms near Leesville, South
Carolina. Round River Farms covers 22 acres, most of which is in pasture, with a pond, a stream, pine and hardwood forest, and a very
productive ¾ acre organic garden. Although we are close to the sandhills region of the state, our soil and bedrock are of the typical
piedmont variety, clay rich soil on a bedrock of shale.
In 1999 Trish Hildebrandt, Trudy Pixton, Travis Perry and a team of Percheron draft horses (Maggie and Molly) worked the farm. Things
have changed a bit since 1999. For starters, Maggie and Molly have had foals and haven't been doing much farming. In addition to the
original three (or should we say five) folks, a number of people have contributed time and resources to the success of this farm and
are listed in the acknowledgements. Since 1999 we have steadily increased the quality and variety of our vegetable production as well
as our knowledge of organic farming.
Now in our 9th year, we anticipate that you will reap the organic produce benefits of the visionary young minds of our student interns.
We believe that through community support our farm can provide the following:
* Produce and herbs
* A retreat to which shareholders may come and observe their food growing and enjoy a peaceful setting.
* A resource center for other organic growers.
* A model for other CSA programs in the area.
* A haven for wildlife.
